Founded in 1960, the Austin Nature and Science Center is an outdoor science center built to teach students and visitors about complex natural systems. Its goal is to offer hands-on educational exhibits and activities that build awareness and appreciation for the environment.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AT THE AUSTIN NATURE AND SCIENCE CENTER?
The ANSC has a broad mix of recreational activities and programs for every age group. Visitors can explore the Forest Trail, the Naturalists Workshop, the Dino Pit Fossil Dig, the Wildlife Exhibits, and a range of temporary and permanent exhibits.
The Trade Counter (open limited hours), bird watching, and accessible trails around the pond system are all great seasonal draws. There is something to do all year long.
Nature and science exhibits like the Nano Exhibit also appear at the Visitor’s Pavilion from time to time. The ANSC schedules school programs, self-guided tour registration, homeschool programs, and Nature’s Way Preschool.
The ANSC also hosts art exhibits, including Tempo 3D Art Installations, Art in Public Places, and others. Many of these are temporary, so each visit brings something new to see!
DOES THE ANSC COST ANYTHING?
Entry to the Austin Nature and Science Center is free for individuals and families. Organized groups pay a $1 per person fee. Camps, most educational programs, adventure experiences, and similar offerings are fee based, since they require registration and advance scheduling.

The scenic Austin Nature and Science Center is open seven days a week during these hours:
- Monday - Saturday from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
- Sunday from Noon - 5:00 pm
Note: The site is closed on some City of Austin official holidays and during certain events.
